About the Document

The responsibility for secondary traumatic stress (STS) prevention has historically on the at-risk individuals. However, there have been calls for organizational efforts to lessen STS. A recently convened expert panel stated that STS prevention and intervention efforts must be dually focused on individuals and organizations.

In 2024, the STS Consortium released a set of principles to help organizations and individuals address secondary traumatic stress. Using input from international STS experts and the latest research, these principles offer best practices for addressing secondary traumatic stress that considers how individuals and organizations can work together in an effective manner.
